BMW M series guide 2026: M2, M3, M5 or M8 - which one to choose?
Used BMW M buying guide: M vs M Performance, real 2026 prices in Lithuania, what to check before buying. Based on the Vin Motors M inventory.

There are two BMW M5s in our showroom right now. One was built in 2006, runs a naturally aspirated V10 and costs 29,999 €. The other is a 2025 hybrid priced at 104,000 €. Between them lie nineteen years of M history - and each one has its buyer. That is how wide the M world is: from an 18,000 € M235i to the latest flagships.
This guide is for anyone considering their first (or next) M: how a real M differs from M Performance, what different models actually cost in Lithuania in 2026, what you must check before buying, and which M fits which scenario. Everything is based on cars that are currently - or were until recently - on our lot.

M or M Performance: what's the difference
The most common confusion we see when talking to buyers: M340i and M3 sound almost identical, yet the prices differ by a factor of two. The difference is fundamental.
Real M cars (M2, M3, M4, M5, M8, X3 M, X4 M) are reworked from the ground up by BMW's M division: different engine, different suspension, different brakes, reinforced transmission, wider body geometry. These are sports cars for which four doors or a trunk are merely a bonus.
M Performance (M235i, M240i, M340i, M440i, M550i, M850i) is the fastest version of the regular series: a powerful engine and M cosmetics, but a more comfortable character and noticeably lower running costs. For daily driving they have power to spare - the M340i hits 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.
The practical rule: if the car will be the only one in the household and you drive every day, M Performance is often the smarter choice. If you want maximum character and are prepared for the costs that come with it - a real M.
The compact route: M2, M235i and M240i
The cheapest way into the M world is the 2 Series. On our lot, M235i and M240i coupes (F22) range between 18,000 and 26,000 € - for that money you get a six-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive and a compact body that weighs less than anything else on this list.
The BMW M2 is the next level up. The F87-generation M2 (2016-2021) is regarded by many enthusiasts as the purest of the breed: short wheelbase, an available manual gearbox, a lively, unfiltered character. Used prices in Lithuania start at around 35,000 €, while the later M2 Competition with the more powerful S55 engine approaches 44,000 €.
Who it suits: a second car, weekends, someone who wants maximum fun per euro and doesn't carry rear-seat passengers.
The middle class: M3, M4, M340i and M440i
This is the most practical corner of the M world. The M340i with the legendary B58 engine (374 hp) costs around 35,000 € in Lithuania - a car that takes the kids to school on Monday and outruns most of what's on the road on Saturday. The B58 is considered one of the most reliable modern BMW petrol engines.
The M440i is the same recipe in a coupe body: sleeker, lower, with xDrive. In our inventory, 2021-2024 examples run 42,000-53,000 €.
The real M3 and M4 with the S58 engine (510 hp in Competition versions before the 2024 refresh) are a category of their own - a sedan and a coupe that feel at home on a track. Used non-Competition G80/G82-generation cars start at around 65,000 € in Lithuania, Competition versions from 75,000 €.
Who it suits: M340i/M440i - the only family car, but with character. M3/M4 - when speed is the priority, not the bonus.
The flagships: M5 and M8
The BMW M5 story is best told by our own showroom. The 2006 E60 M5 with its 5-liter naturally aspirated V10 (507 hp) is one of the most charismatic sedans ever built and costs 30,000 € today. It is a collector's car with serious ownership caveats: the V10 demands meticulous maintenance, and the SMG gearbox requires specific expertise. Buy one only with a complete service history and a cool head.
The new 2025 G90 M5 is an entirely different philosophy: a hybrid V8 powertrain, 727 hp, everyday comfort and a 104,000 € price. Between these two extremes sits the F90 generation (2018-2023) - arguably the most rational fast sedan in the world.
The M8 and M850i occupy the GT niche: a spacious coupe for long journeys at high speed. A 2020 M8 Coupe (600+ hp) on our lot costs 64,000 € - new, the same car would cost more than double that.
Who it suits: M5 - when you need one car for everything, including trips with four people. M8/M850i - when you mostly travel far, and as a pair.
SUVs with the M badge: X3 M and X4 M
If the family needs a high seating position and the driver needs the S58 engine, the answer is the X4 M or X3 M. Both make 480-510 hp, both work as daily drivers, and both cost noticeably less in Lithuania than comparable-condition examples in Germany. In our inventory, 2020 cars run 40,000-45,000 €.
The one warning: this is the first generation with the S58, so service history matters even more here than usual.
What to check when buying a used M
M cars are bought on emotion, and emotion is the most expensive way to buy. Our checklist:
- Service history is sacred. An M without a full service history is cheaper for a reason. Oil-change intervals, transmission maintenance, bearing condition on older models - everything must be documented.
- Check whether the car has seen track use. Track days aren't bad in themselves, provided the oil and brake pads were changed afterwards - but a hidden track life is a serious red flag. Unusually worn brakes and evenly scrubbed tire shoulders give it away.
- Chip tuning. Extra power without documentation means unknown stress on the transmission and engine. Ask directly and verify with diagnostic equipment.
- Plan a running-cost budget. For a real M: a set of tires is 1,200-2,000 €, front brakes with discs can reach 2,000 €, and insurance is noticeably more expensive. M Performance costs are closer to a regular BMW.
- Body geometry and paint. Rear-wheel drive plus Lithuanian winters is a frequent source of mishaps. A paint-thickness gauge is mandatory.

Which M to choose for your scenario
- The only family car, but with character: M340i or M440i. Fast, reliable, comfortable, sensible running costs.
- A weekend toy: M2. Maximum fun per euro, the smallest body, the purest character.
- Family + speed + high seating position: X4 M or X3 M.
- One car for everything, no compromises: M5. Four doors, 600+ hp, a trunk.
- Long, fast journeys for two: M8 or M850i.
- Collecting and character: the E60 M5 with the V10 - but only with a full history and a maintenance budget.

FAQ
What's the difference between the M340i and the M3?
The M340i is the most powerful version of the regular 3 Series (M Performance, 374 hp), while the M3 is a standalone sports car developed by the M division (510 hp in Competition form). Comparing M340i vs M3 head-to-head: the M3 is faster and sharper, but more expensive to buy and to run. For daily driving, the M340i is more than enough for most buyers.
Is an M car expensive to run?
A real M costs more than a regular BMW: tires, brakes, insurance and fuel make up the main expenses. Driven actively, expect the annual difference to reach a few thousand euros. M Performance models run closer to regular BMW costs.
Is the E60 M5 with the V10 worth buying?
As a collector's and emotional car - yes, it's one of the most special BMWs in history. As a daily driver - no. The V10 and the SMG gearbox demand specific care, so a complete service history here is not a preference but a necessity.
Are M cars suited to Lithuanian roads and winters?
Yes, with conditions: good winter tires are mandatory, and xDrive versions (M340i, M440i, X3 M, X4 M, newer M5s) are far more practical in winter than the rear-wheel-drive models. The lower M suspension calls for caution over curbs and on potholed roads.
